In 1186 a Benedictine convent was founded at Kirkjubær (now Kirkjubæjar-klaustur), which operated until the Reformation in 1554. A folk tale tells of disobedient nuns who were burned at the stake on the top of Systrastapi (Sisters’ Rock). The names of Systravatn (Sisters’ Lake) and Systrafoss (Sisters’ Falls) adjacent to the village are also references to the nuns. In 1995 archaeological excavations began on the area around the old churchyard in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, in order to pinpoint the location of the medieval convent. The exhibition History in the Sands – the Kirkjubær Convent opened in June 2003, and is open during the summer months in Kirkjubæjarstofa. The exhibition changes as the archaeological research progresses, so visitors can keep up with developments. Short documentaries on the research, as well as multimedia presentations, provide interesting interactive information on old Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
