In 1186 a Benedictine convent was founded at Kirkjubær (now Kirkjubæjarklaustur), which operated until the Reformation in 1554. In 1995-2006 archaeological excavations took place on the area around the old churchyard in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, in order to pinpoint the location of the medieval convent. The exhibition History in the Sands – the Kirkjubær Convent opened in June 2003. It includes documentaries on the research, as well as multimedia presentations on the old Kirkjubæjar-klaustur. In the summer 2011 the exhibition will be on display in the Community house at Klausturvegur 2.
